first, upendo is "love." love in the swahili language, spoken in africa. when i first had the ideas for this project, i searched and searched for terms and words that i wanted. the word upendo was (clearly) a favorite, not only do i have a dream of someday spending a chunk of time photographing orphans in africa, but each day i try and remember how good we have it here and constantly compare to africa. these sweet families in africa, the orphans, the children, everything. i want to see it. i want to feel their love and compassion towards the world and each other.
secondly, love is a word not used quite enough at all. i want the world to be a beautiful place with beautiful souls and hearts that not only want to love others, but to love themselves. life has too much potential and amazing aspects of it to be pushed aside and hidden behind darkness.
so that is it. upendo meaning love. it's a dream of mine. i want people to love themselves, love others, feel beautiful, have beautiful souls. i want flowers to grow in the darkest places of the earth, starting here. this is a movement.
